Cake Gadget of the Week

Yes that is what it looks like and no I'm not mental, my cake gadget of the week really is an empty egg box.  OK so I'm not sure an empty egg box really counts as a gadget but they're really handy when it comes to making sugar flowers.

If you have a blossom cutter its very easy to make simple flat sugar flowes but to make them look like beautiful curved flowers you need somewhere curved to dry them.  You can buy special tools such as these Flower Forming Cups from Wilton.  But if you're working on a large project requiring lots of flowers its not practical to buy lots of these.  Instead you can use an empty egg box and achieve the exactly the same effect at a fraction of the price!

Here's how.

First off remove the lid and any other excess bits of cardboard so you end up with something like this.

Then cover the egg tray in a layer of foil.

Finally press the foil down in each egg compartment to create a gentle curve.  And there you have it homemade forming cups to dry your sugar flowers in.
