How to..........Quilt A Sugarpaste Covered Cake Board

I was asked a couple of weeks ago to make a cake with a quilted effect cake board and so thought I'd share my easy, low cost method of doing it.

You can buy all sorts of fancy quilting tools such as this and diamond cutters like these and special tools like this which are all fab but if you don't have any of these to hand its still possible to create a quilted effect with kitchen utensils you probably already have in your drawer.  This method is also a lot more versatile and customisable as you can adjust the size of the diamonds exactly to your liking which may be important depending on your design.

So here's how its done:

What You'll Need

- cake board
- sugarpaste
- long metal ruler
- pizza cutter
- royal icing
- decorative balls

Step 1 - cover your cake board in sugarpaste.  Its advisable to make the sugarpaste just that bit thicker than you usually would when covering a cake board.  This helps to give that effect of puffiness on the quilt.

Step 2 - lay a ruler at the side of the cake board (or across the middle if its a round cake) and mark at equal intervals.  I went for an inch.  Then repeat on each side of the board.  This step is trickier on a round board as there's no straight edges to measure against and you may need a geometric triangle (like we had at school!!) to make sure you've got right angles.

Step 3 - lay the ruler across the board lining up the marks.

Step 4 - score across the edge of the ruler with your pizza cutter to make a line.

Step 5 - continue until the whole board is lined.  Ta da!

Step 6 - then repeat on the other side........

until you have this effect.

Step 7 - then you need to make the indents for the ball decoration that will feature at the corner of each diamond.  This is completely optional but I think it adds a nice touch.  To do this I just used the small end of a ball tool to make a small hole at each corner.

Step 8 - I added a small amount of royal icing to each hole before I placed the ball in just so it wouldn't come unstuck during transport.  It's also best to do this after you've put your cake on the board.

And here's the finished result, cake included!
